Welcome!
At Sacred Heart Food Pantry, our goal is to provide grocery items to those who are food insecure in our community. We can also direct you to other resources if needed. Sacred Heart Food Pantry operates entirely on donations, grants, and the work of volunteers.
The donations to our pantry go toward food purchases and related grocery items, such as cleaning products and paper goods. Our volunteers shop for perishable items, pick up donations from local grocery stores, and do food rescues for the pantry. Thanks to these contributions, we can continue to work toward our mission of providing aid to those in need.
The food pantry is located downstairs upon entering the building. We are open on Wednesday mornings from 9:30-11:30 am and Friday evenings from 4:30-6:30 am to accommodate different work schedules.
If you’re interested in our services or learning more about our pantry, please contact us or stop in during operating hours.
How it works:
Our Service to our Customers Our customers are met by our volunteers who resister then accompany them as they shop for essential items including, but not limited to, canned goods, cereal, fresh produce, frozen meats, dairy items such as eggs, cheese, and milk, as well as toilet paper, soaps and washes, shampoo, detergents, cleansers, bleach, and dish soaps, and personal hygiene products. Once the shopping is complete volunteers then carry your items out to your car.
Our History:
Our pantry will soon be celebrating its third anniversary in our current location at 326 W 10th Street in Michigan City. The Sacred Heart Food Pantry at St. Mary is a rebirth of the former Sacred Heart Mission Food Pantry, that had been housed in the basement at Sacred Heart Church in Michigan City. In 2018, the closing of Sacred Heart Church and the subsequent renovation of the church building into a homeless shelter, Interfaith Community Public Action Delivering Shelter (PADS), left the Sacred Heart Mission Food Pantry without a home. In May 2021, St. Mary the Immaculate Conception Parish revived the pantry in the uninhabited basement of the former St. Mary’s School building. Volunteers worked tirelessly to clean, make needed repairs and paint the four former classrooms that are now the Sacred Heart Food Pantry at St. Mary.
